How your favourite tipple can affect your teeth and what you can do about it.

We love a glass of our favourite tipple as much as the next person, but sadly, as with many things in life, you can have too much of a good thing.

Alcoholic drinks tend to be acidic and are usually sipped over the course of a few hours. This can lead to irreversible damage to the enamel on your teeth, affecting their appearance and increasing the risk of pain and sensitivity. Cocktails and mixers contain lots of sugar, increasing the risk of decay, and drinks like red wine and beer can cause staining.

So, the next time you pour yourself a glass, consider the following tips to reduce your risk of developing the dreaded Prosecco Smile.

1) Don’t drink alcohol.

Controversial, we know, but it’s an option. Moving swiftly on…

2) Drink through a straw and avoid swishing your drink around your mouth.

This reduces the amount of contact your drink has with your teeth.

3) Alternate drinks with water.

Not only does this give your teeth a break from acid attacks, it keeps you hydrated and helps prevent a hangover. Win!

4) Avoid brushing your teeth for at least an hour after drinking alcohol.

Brushing enamel that has been softened by acid can cause further damage, so allow some time for your teeth to recover before brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. Chewing sugar-free gum after drinking can also help neutralise the acid in your mouth. (Link to Xylitol – What’s the deal? blog post)

5) Come and see us!

Regular appointments are crucial in maintaining good oral health. The team at Paste will check for any signs of decay and erosion as part of our thorough consultation and advise you on how to keep your smile healthy and beautiful. Call us or schedule a visit.

Remember – Alcohol is best enjoyed in moderation, not just for your oral health but your overall wellbeing. Stick to within the government guidelines of 14 units per week, spreading your alcohol consumption out over at least 3 days, with some rest days in between. Drink safely and responsibly.

Cheers!
