Bad breath ruining your pick-up game!?
Follow these top tips to treat that halitosis and dial up the passion this Valentines Day Weekend!
Bad breath (halitosis) can be caused by a variety of factors and certainly a problem people often feel too embarrassed to talk about!
As a general and cosmetic dentist, I regularly see patient’s in our Belfast clinic, terribly embarrassed that their partner has flagged this issue to them, and desperate to find a cure and quickly!
Its so important to look at a number of factors to find the underlying cause for my patients, taking away the stigma, and offering care free from embarrassment or judgment - period.
What are the causes of bad breath?
With halitosis it is not a one size fits all approach, various factors are at play, within and outside of the patient’s control.
Poor oral hygiene and a lack of inter-dental cleaning.
Dry mouth often medication induced - lacking saliva which can help cleanse the mouth.
Tobacco usage - smoking or chewing tobacco can cause a profound and stale odour.
Medical conditions such as digestive issues, ketone bodies, tonsilar stones.
Dental conditions such as untreated gum disease, dental cavities, or the acute and severe condition of necrotising ulcerative gingivitis, often found in young adults burning the candle at both ends!
More systemic diseases such as undiagnosed or poorly managed diabetes, certain cancers (such as lung cancer) or metabolic disorders, producing chemical which cause bad breath.
So what can be done?
At Paste, we take a health optimisation approach, trying to ensure that all areas which could be a factor are checked and managed.
Firstly it’s so vital that your oral health is on point, with gum disease, cavities and any oral causes addressed. Twice daily brushing and thorough inter-dental cleaning is a must, with bespoke individualised care plans to manage periodontal pocketing, to reduce bacterial load and to remove gum inflammation.
Drinking plenty of water is key to rinse out bacteria and other particles or debris leading to bad breath.
Quitting smoking or the use of tobacco products is vital, this will also remove tooth staining and provide a catalog of wider health benefits as most people know!
It is also important for us to work in tandem with your GP, to rule out any systemic disease or underlying health issues away from the oral cavity.
For a quick blast to neutralise smells or odours, try sugar free mints/ an antiseptic mouthwash or a tongue scraper.
Finally we encourage everyone to seek out and find a dentist and make those 6 monthly visits part of your routine. Do not leave the condition untreated and please do not feel any embarrassment at mentioning this or asking about treatment for bad breath. You will be surprised how many people feel shame, yet often it is out of their own control. Let us care for you, free from judgment and in a space when you feel seen, heard and safe allowing you to put your health first and to be confidently free from bad breath, each and every day.
