Dentures - What’s the deal?
Dentures get a bit of a hard time. They have a reputation for being ill-fitting, unnatural-looking, and unhygienic. True, they are not as good as your own teeth, but with around 11 million denture wearers in the UK, 1 million of them being under the age of 45, there is clearly a need for the humble denture.
Here, we are going to clear up some myths and discuss the benefits of dentures and try to reduce the stigma of wearing a denture for those who need to.
Myth #1 – Dentures always look fake
A lot of work goes into making high-quality dentures look like the real thing. We take photos and measurements of your mouth for the dental technician, so they can choose the correct size and shade of teeth and ensure the gum-coloured part of the denture blends with the natural gums. You’ll also have the opportunity to check the shape, size, and fit of the denture before the final stage of construction, and changes and adjustments can be made.
Myth #2 – Dentures are always loose and move around
Well-made dentures should stay put when you eat and speak, and there are different types of dentures available, depending on how many teeth are missing. Some are made entirely of a type of acrylic, others have a metal base, and some have clasps on them to help keep them in place. Your dentist is the best person to help choose the right type for you or look at alternatives, such as implants or bridges.
Myth #3 – Dentures are unhygienic
This is simply not true. However, you must clean your denture well and have a good oral hygiene routine. Our Hygienist, Susana, will be able to give you the best tips on denture care and can help you keep the rest of your mouth as healthy as possible.
